The act of naming has held an important place in humanity’s process of making sense of its environment from the past to the present. By naming the entities it encounters, humans position them in their minds and, in this way, construct their own world of meaning. The naming of living and non-living elements that attract attention or are attributed importance clearly reveals the function of names in human life. Giving a name to a being is not limited to merely defining it; it also involves the process of placing it in a specific position in the mind. This situation regulates the individual’s way of thinking while also facilitating the learning process. Thus, humans can evaluate the events and situations they encounter within a more comprehensible framework. At the same time, names play a significant role in the transmission of cultural accumulation; the values, beliefs, and ways of life of societies are passed down to future generations through language. On the other hand, naming not only provides practicality by eliminating communication confusion in daily life, but also enables the dissemination and sharing of knowledge through scientific, geographical, and cultural naming systems. In this respect, naming is a practice that both shapes the individual’s way of thinking and ensures social order. In this context, issues such as the origin of names, the formation of naming traditions, and the classification of name types are examined within the scope of onomastics. Over time, onomastics has been divided into various sub-disciplines. Toponymy is one of these disciplines and studies the names given by people to the places they inhabit. Place names do not merely identify a location; they also reflect the cultural, social, and emotional world of societies. Therefore, the name of a place is considered an important part of the cultural identity of that community. Many factors influence the formation process of place names. While the way of life, traditions and customs, language, and religious beliefs of a society are decisive in this process, personal names, plant and animal names, legends, professions, and historical events also shape naming practices. This diversity ensures that place names possess a rich and multifaceted semantic structure. Within the context of the richness and diversity of place names, the place names derived from plant names found in twenty-eight villages of the Balışeyh district have been examined. It has been observed that most of these names continue to be used among the local people. The evaluation of these place names will not only contribute to studies on vocabulary but will also reveal important data from a linguistic perspective. This study is significant in that it demonstrates how place names are formed and preserved over time, while also contributing to a better understanding of the richness of local culture and language and ensuring its transmission to future generations. The findings obtained will serve as a guide for future research on similar topics and will provide researchers with an exemplary field of study.
